Background:

As the Program Manager at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center, I took on the exciting project of planning and executing the first ever Lunar New Year x Black History Month Community Celebration of Black-Asian Solidarity.

The Challenge:

The event created an intentional space for Black History and Future in Oakland Chinatown while continuing to honor Asian American cultural traditions, creating opportunities to bridge diverse communities and build solidarity.

My Impact:

I brought together staff, volunteers, and community partners to co-create the vision for the event and design the user experience. As the project lead, I was able to bring this vision to life, which included:

  • 10 Performances showcasing artforms such as dance, martial arts, drumming, spoken word, and music from both the Black and Asian communities

  • Marketplace with 30 business vendors and community resources

  • Kids Zone with art activities and cultural storytime

  • Gallery exhibition featuring archival documents and photographs

  • Hybrid event and ASL interpretation

  • Collaboration with a local artist to design a flyer that pays homage to our unique space at the heart of Oakland Chinatown

Through various marketing strategies, the event generated 500+ registered guests and over 1,000 in-person attendees.

This event laid the foundation for the organization to have more events that fully activate the space, and to continue working in solidarity with the Black and Asian community with hopes to revive this annual tradition for years to come.
